Review: Keurig Platinum Brewer

Good Morning! Did you have coffee today?

The folks at Keurig sent me a Platinum Brewer to test out a few months ago. I personally don’t drink coffee but my husband is a big fan. I told him if I accepted the Keurig, he would need to write the review. So today I bring you Mr. Saving with Shellie. Stan gives you his opinion of the Keurig Platinum Brewer.

The Keurig Platinum Brewer is a simple coffee system that has really helped me get that extra spring in my step each morning for the past several weeks. I have been a coffee drinker for years now, and have had the same routine each evening: clean out the pot and filter, fill the maker with water, install new filter, fill with grounds, and set the timer for my am wake-up call. Then, it all changed. With the Keurig, there is no filter… just pop in a K-cup and go. With the on-board water reservoir, you only have to add water every couple of days, and with the K-cup, there are no grounds and used filter to dispose of.

To make things even better, there are tons of different varieties of coffees to try. Personally, I like to keep things simple, and I have found that the French Roast works best for me. But, for the more adventurous personalities, there are plenty of types to dive into. What’s more, you can even get hot tea K-cups, and as it turns out, Earl Grey is fantastic.

One of the best features of the maker itself is the ability to choose from different size cups to brew. This allows me to adjust the amount of coffee dispensed to fit each one of my different mugs perfectly. The only draw back, though, is the largest dispense size is still far too small for my travel mug. However, I have overcome this by setting the brew size to a medium mug setting, and then running the brew cycle twice. Although, this definitely affects the strength of the coffee, it is still plenty strong for me. I suppose you could overcome this problem by using a second K-cup, but I don’t want to spend that much.

Overall, I think Keurig has done a great job of creating a single serve coffee maker which still offers enough variety in its coffee selections to please even the most discriminatory. I have found that you can find a reusable filter online, and I intend to purchase one. I know this defeats the ease-of-use principle, but it reduces the cost per serving. I will be sure to let everyone knows how it works out.

In watching Stan use this brewer I have noticed several things. The K cups can be pretty pricey but you can often buy them in bulk from Amazon for much less than regular retail. Yes, it’s more expensive than Folgers but it’s much less than getting Starbucks every day. The Keurig is impractical when you need a lot of coffee at once. If you’re having several guests or coffee after a dinner party, you’ll want to break out the traditional coffee maker and brew a big pot.

Is it worth the price? If you are satisfied with ordinary coffee or drink 10 cups a day, no. If you prefer premium coffee, want an easy cleanup, like to change your flavors regularly and/or are trying to cut down on Satubucks, yes. I think for many people this is a great coffee maker. I think you’ll really enjoy it. So maybe add it to your birthday or Christmas list this year!

Do any of you have a Keurig Coffee Maker? What do you think?

I’ve had one for almost 2 years now. I love it. It definitely makes it less likely that I will spend money on Starbucks or other expensive coffee houses. I also use the refillable filter option in most cases as it is definitely less expensive. It works fairly well though you have to be sure you close it completely or else you get grounds in your coffee. I also use the 1 cup/2 brews method to fill my larger cups —-especially when I am making iced coffee it works well because I don’t need it to be so strong!

I love my Keurig! I got one for Christmas and it was the only thing I’d asked for. My husband was stumped as to why I’d want a coffee pot, and such a pricey one at that. Turns out it is our FAVORITE appliance. My skeptical husband is now the biggest uer.

I also use the $14.99 reusable filter, which is a wise investment. I have a nice stash of great K-Cups, but if I have a favorite coffee that isn’t offered with Keurig, then I pop the filter in and go. It’s also GREAT for hot teas, too. I stretch the K-cups occasionally since my husband goes through them a lot. I can get about 3 regular coffee cup sizes out of one K-cup before it gets too weak.

Another NICE thing with the platinum Keurig is the iced tea feature. It’ll brew the tea and the pour it into a (non-glass) container filled with ice. VERY cool and the teas are quite good.

I have one. It’s the best Christmas gift I ever got. Bed Bath & Beyond carries the Keurig, the K-cups and if you choose to go the re-usable filter route, they sell that too.

What’s best isI can usually come up with a 20% off coupon for Bed Bath & Beyond and I don’t have to pay or wait for shipping.

the coffee is quick, mess free and less expensive than a coffee shop. No lines either!

We have had our Keurig for 2 years. I have actually talked 3 other people into buying one of their own. I find I spend less on coffee because I have 1 cup a day and would brew 2-3 cups in our traditional coffee maker just to get it to come out okay. Plus I can pop the k-cup holder in the dishwasher every few days and it takes up much less room than our Cuisinart grind-n-brew parts do. Definitely a great machine. Also, if you participate in Amazon’s Subscribe and Save program, you can get a 2-pack of k-cups shipped for about $17. total. Slightly better than Bed, Bath & Beyond with a 20% off coupon and sales tax.

My husband tells me all the time, “I love this coffee maker!” And he’s had a lot of coffee makers and is a serious coffee guy. We too buy our k-cups at Bed, Bath and Beyond with coupons. Even though I’m not a serious coffee drinker, I do enjoy using the filter cup for ground coffees on the weekends. But my husband sticks to the k-cups and likes the bold flavored coffees. This coffee maker is worth every penny.
