Do you remember going on field trips in school? I remember how excited I would be before getting to go to the local zoo or planetarium for the day. Getting to see animals first hand and even touch them made learning about them much more real. Plus, it was so much fun that I still remember them.
But did you know that according to a 2009 report from The American Association of School Administrators, it’s estimated that over the course of the current school year more than 30,000 schools will be eliminating field trips? That seems so sad to me that so many kids will have to go without field trips.
Lunchables Lunch Combinations is doing their part to help deserving kids across the country. They launched a new initiative called Project Potential that helps empower kids to achieve their best. The first effort in this initiative is Field Trips For All and you can help!
Do you know a school that is eliminating field trips due to cost or currently unable to host field trips? If so, you can nominate your favorite classroom. Fifty deserving classrooms will be selected from the Field Trips For All nominations to go on a field trip. It will be a fun, educational experience for kids who might not normally get the opportunity.
To see one wild field trip, check out Alien Field Trip that a group of 5th graders took to the Columbia Space Center to learn about space. They encountered a little more than they anticipated! It’s really cute.
While we didn’t get to do anything like the Alien Field Trip, my favorite field trip growing up was Enterprise City in the 4th grade. It was an entire city that we got to run ourselves. Complete with a bank and police officers. I was a bookkeeper in the sign shop. I even got my own checkbook and was able to spend my earnings on snacks, jewelry and other junk. It was a very fun day! What was your favorite field trip as a child?
Oh and don’t forget to nominate your favorite classroom! Who are you going to nominate?

Omg, we had a similar thing, here in Florida: Enterprise Village! All of my friends STILL remember what their job was and what their responsibilities were, etc etc. Unfortunately, I didn’t move here until a year AFTER my grade went, so I never got to go! To this day, I still want to go- and work at the Blockbuster or manage a McDonalds or whatever.
I think my favorite field trip as a kid was going to the Houston science museum. I think part of the fun was just getting to do something besides school that day, but I really enjoyed the exhibits and play area at the science museum.
I remember doing Enterprise City, too! But my favorite field trips by far were to the Planetarium. I loved learning about all the constellations and it was always so relaxing to watch the stars moving through the “night sky.”
When I taught 3rd grade before my daughter was born, we had some fun trips for the kids, too. My favorite was going to the gymnasium with them- they were learning about fitness and health, but it was also very math-oriented (it was right before the math TAKS test). I don’t know whether they still get to go or not, but the kids had a blast and learned a ton. Ahh… memories!
There are so many good ones – but I think I’m going to have to pick Samuel Farm. We drove by it recently and it brought back so many memories – I couldn’t stop telling my husband all about it. Field Trips should definitely not be cut out – kids need a break from the classroom every once in a while!
What a neat thing! I know that funding for field trips have been cut and what a great opportunity some schools might have that might not otherwise.
My sons school did Biz Town which is similar to what you mentioned – a city that the kids ran with several businesses, a mayor, post office, bank, newspaper, radio station, etc. What a fun day while learning how the “real world” works!
I remember helping at Enterprise City. The parents had to do a training day, which consisted of playing the roles our kids would play when they went to Enterprise City. As fun as that was, the day the kids went was the best. And I got to do it again 2 years later when my son went with his class.
I was just talking with my boss today about an elementary school field trip. It was to Mrs. Baird’s Bakery in Houston, TX. At the end, we all got a slice of bread with melted butter. Yum! My boss took the same field trip in elementary school, but he lived in Fort Worth, TX. Same hot buttered bread at the end, too.
The most exciting field trip I remember is going to the San Antonio Zoo in the first grade. It was my very first field trip. It was a great way to spend a beautiful spring day with your classmates seeing all the exotic animals…and the picnic lunch at the park wasn’t too bad either! As a teacher, my second grade classes have visited Crowe’s Nest Farm many times over the years. It was a great learning experience for my students to see all the animals up close and personal like the gigantic boa! I think the kids enjoyed the hayride the most. Field trips are a two for one…learning and fun!!
