Shellie’s Favorite 5 Deals

Welcome to Saving with Shellie! If you are visiting the site for the first time after seeing me on Fox 7, I normally round up my favorite five deals going on right now. However, I thought I’d share five Black Friday shopping tips. Be sure to check out all the Black Friday Deals I’ve posted so far and tune it tomorrow and Monday for the hottest online deals.

:: Set a Budget Before You Go – It’s easy to overspend when you get in a store and impulse buy something you think is a hot deal. Set you budget in advance. Make a list of the items you plan to purchase and stick to it. Afraid you’ll be tempted by all the deals? Shop with cash and leave your credit cards at home.

:: Assess Need vs. Want – The electronics deals every year are always hot. You see TVs and digital cameras lower than they ever have been. The key here is this happens every year. And every year the technology gets better and the prices get lower. So assess your situation. Do you really need a new TV? If you merely want it because the price is great, hold on. Newer technology is right around the corner and the TV you’re eyeing now will be obsolete. However, if your TV is on it’s last leg, by all means, go grab a super cheap one!

:: Shop Online – Many stores offer the same deals in the ad online. Also, Amazon often matches the price on the hottest doorbusters at National stores and offer quite a few hot deals of their own. Save yourself a chilly night outside and shop the deals online. Or download the Amazon iPhone app and shop while you’re waiting in line for other deals.

:: Split Up – Find a friend or family member planning to shop on Black Friday too. Maybe they head to Target and you hit up Walmart. They can grab your gift list items and you can grab theirs. This way you can be in two places at once.

:: Price Match – This won’t work for door busters but is great for all the other deals offered on Black Friday. Walmart will price match Black Friday ads. This is a great way to buy a bunch of gifts at the lowest price in one stop. Plus, since they may not be advertised at the store you’re shopping at, you don’t run the risk of them being sold out. Take the sales flier from other stores and buy the exact item listed in the other store’s flier. Take your receipt with the flier to Customer Service (or just show the cashier when you checkout) and they will refund you the difference. For example, you can get a 24pack of Playdoh at Target on Black Friday for $5.94. The same item is listed in the Walmart flier for $8. Take the Target to Walmart and get the same deal without shopping multiple stores. This is a great option for video games, CDs, DVDs, Board games and books.

Want to find more ways to save? You can get free daily email updates with all the deals, follow along via Facebook or subscribe via RSS feed.

You Asked: What’s the Best Deal On…

Yesterday I asked on the Saving with Shellie Facebook page what items were on your shopping list this year. Many of you asked me to find great deals on popular items. I tried to find deals for everyone’s requests but couldn’t find them all. Here are some of the most popular requests:

Just Dance 2 is listed in the Target ad for $39.99 and you get a $10 gift card WYB 5 Wii games. GameStop has Just Dance too for $38.99 and guarantees it will be in stock. Amazon‘s regular price is $38.99. My advice is wait an see if any online deals pop up on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. If not, get it from Amazon with free shipping and likely no tax.

The cheapest netbook I’ve seen is at Toys R Us. It’s 7″ and has wifi + 3 USB ports for $79.99. CVS has a Sylvania 7″ one for $94.88. The nicest one that is still inexpensive is a 10.1″ Compaq w/Intel Atom Processor, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive and Windows 7 Starter for $149.99 at Best Buy. Or upgrade to 250GB hard drive for $199.99

Walmart has the best advertised deal on bikes. Select 16″ styles are $35.

When you are looking at ads, be very careful to check for 4th generation ones (if you want the newest model). If it doesn’t specify the model, call the store and ask. Or check the features. iPid 4th gen have Facetime and the others don’t. Walmart has the best deal on an 8GB iPod Touch. It’s $229 + $50 Walmart gift card. Not brave enough to battle Walmart? Toys R Us has the identical deal but with a $50 TRU gift card. Best Buy & Target have it $229 + $30 gift card. I bet Amazon will come pretty close to matching it too if you would prefer that but I don’t have any details on an Amazon deal.

For those of you who live in South Texas, you can score on Pillow Pets. It’s the best deal I’ve seen anywhere! HEB Plus has them for $19.97 and they’re buy one, get one free. That means you can get then for $9.99 each!

You can get an xBox 360 (4GB) Game console without Kinect for $199 at both Walmart and Gamestop. The one at Gamestop comes with a free Madden NFL 11 OR Medal of Honor game. Walmart comes with free Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 AND Mass Effect 2. Wanna add Kinect? Both Gamestop and Walmart have Kinect for $149 or as part of the Xbox 360 bundle for $299.

The cheapest one is at Walmart. eMachines 15.6″ Laptop with 2GB memory and 250GB hard drive with Window 7 for $198. A better laptop but still a great price is the Sony Vaio 15.5″ LCD with 3GM memory and 320 GB hard drive with Windows 7 for $399 at Best Buy. And a great bargain is the Toshiba 15.6″ with 4GB memory, 500 GB hard drive plus HP Wireless Printer for $449 at Best Buy.

The cheapest one is at Walmart. Philips 7″ Digital Photo Frame – $29. There’s one by Digital Decor at Target for $29 also but the reviews aren’t as good. The Walmart one is available beginning at 5am.

You can see the full conversations HERE and HERE. I may have found a deal for one of your items that I didn’t list above. Or search through all the top Black Friday deals I’ve posted so far.

Keep in mind we will be seeing some sweet online deals. Many stores are offering different deals online and if earlier this week is any indication, Amazon will be crazy good. Plus, there’s Cyber Monday. So you may still find a great deal for those more obscure items.

Note: I can’t guarantee that the deal I listed is the absolute cheapest. I’ve sifted through dozens of ads and this is what I saw. I’m only human though and may have missed something. If you find a better deal than the one I quoted, please leave a comment and let us know.

Thrifty Thanksgiving: Parsleyed Green Beans

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and last year I got tons of emails from readers asking for advice on how to host the holiday on a dime. I wrote a post last year with a few tips but I thought this year I’d take it a little further. I teamed up with two other bloggers to bring you some frugal recipes that you can make for your own celebration or take to someone else’s.

All the recipes I will post will need minimal ingredients, use things you likely have on hand and/or require ingredients that are inexpensive to buy. Hopefully these will give you some ideas to host a Thrifty Thanksgiving while still setting a beautiful table.

Fresh & Frugal: Parsleyed Green Beans

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 pounds green beans, washed and both ends trimmed
  • 3 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 2 tsp. fresh garlic, finely chopped with pinch of salt
  • 2 Tbsp. chopped parsley
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Flat-leaf parsley (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill large pot with water; bring to rolling boil.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon salt and the beans.
  3. Cook, uncovered, for 5 to 8 minutes or until tender but still vibrant green and slightly resistant to the bite.
  4. Drain beans; immediately submerge in bowl of lightly salted ice water to stop cooking and set color.
  5. When thoroughly chilled, drain well.
  6. In a wide skillet heat butter over medium-high heat until hot and foaming.
  7. Add beans. Cook, tossing often, until heated through.
  8. Sprinkle with garlic and parsley, a generous amount of salt, and a few grinds of black pepper.
  9. Cook 1 minute longer, tossing frequently to distribute flavorings and avoid burning the garlic.
  10. Sprinkle with additional parsley.

Serve immediately. Makes 6 to 8 servings. To make this dish ahead of time, just do steps one through five. Then cover and chill up to 24 hours.

Less Fresh – More Frugal: Green Bean Casserole

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 cans green beans
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Dash ground black pepper
  • 1 1/3 cups French Fried Onions

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Stir the soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, beans and 2/3 cup onions in a 1 1/2-quart casserole.
  2. Bake at 350°F. for 25 minutes or until the bean mixture is hot and bubbling.
  3. Stir the bean mixture.
  4. Sprinkle with the remaining onions.

You Asked: How Can I Print Coupons on the Cheap?

This article was originally published on 10/13/09.

I get questions from readers quite often asking how to save on all those ink cartridges we use printing coupons. Sometimes you go through ink so quickly it hardly seems like printing the coupons is even worth it. But there are some techniques you can try to help save on the ink you currently have. And I have some money saving tips on how you can replace them for less.

First, change your printer settings. Go to your computer’s Control Panel. Select the printers icon. Your default printer will be listed with a check mark next to it.

Right click on the printer icon and go to the properties. All printers are different but you should be able to edit the printing preferences. The ink saving features are usually on the “Advanced” tab.

Be sure you select the lowest resolution, quick-print, or “draft” setting. This uses the least amount of ink and does not affect the scanning ability of the coupon.

If your black and white cartridge is separate from your color cartridge, you can opt to print everything in black and white. Then you’ll rarely need to replace the costlier color cartridges.

Once you are out of ink, there are a number of money saving options.

1. Walgreens refills ink cartridges. The black and white are priced around $10. Occasionally you will find an in-ad coupon to make them cheaper. Plus, you can always pay with Register Rewards! You can also refill them at Office Max Costco and other stores.

2. Use the Staples cartridge recycling program. Not only will you be helping the environment but you’ll also get $3 per cartridge. The $3 is a Staples reward so you must have a Staples Reward Card.

3. Invest in a Laser Printer. Laser printers use toner, not ink. And with all the modern technology, they’ve really come down in price. You can likely find a decent one for around $100. I’m not saying run out and buy one, but when you are in the market for a new printer, a laser printer would be an excellent investment. Toner cartridges generally last at least 3000-5000 prints. That’s a lot of printed coupons!

What other ways have you found to save on printer ink?

30 Money Saving iPhone Apps

It seems almost everyone has a smart phone these days and with the increase in smart phones comes a whole slew of apps you can download to them. There are so many that it’s a daunting task to pick ones that will serve you well without clogging up space on your phone.

So how do you choose? Well, my friend Erin over at Coupon Cravings recently finished a roundup of 30 Money Saving iPhone apps. While her list is geared toward iPhone and iTouch, you may still be interested in reading it even if you don’t have either of those devices. I know many companies have the same apps available for other phone platforms like Blackberry and Android.

Here are a few I hadn’t heard of before:

:: Ask Dave Ramsey - This app allows you to see the most recent call-in topics to Dave’s show. You can read a summary of a listener’s question as well as Dave’s answer or even listen to the on-air exchange. You also have the option to browse Dave’s advice by category. If you love Dave, you’ll love this app.

:: BIGWORDS - This app is a price-comparison search engine for college textbooks. Just enter the ISBN number for the book you want to buy and BIGWORDS will show you where you can buy the book at the best price. BIGWORDS can also show you textbooks that can be rented. And when school’s out, you can even sell your books back through this service. Don’t send one of your children or siblings head off to college without checking out this one!

:: ATM Hunter - We’ve all been there: all the way across town, at the airport or in a strange city and you need cash. This app helps you find the closest ATM to your current location. You can even filter by bank name to avoid those pesky non-network ATM fees. There are also filter options for 24-hour ATMs, drive through ATMs and other features.

These are just three of the 30 Erin reviews. Some may be familiar, others might be new to you. I believe most of them are also free to download as well. Check out the full list HERE.

How about you? What are your favorite phone apps?

Easy Quesadilla Recipe with Mission Tortillas

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Mission Foods. All opinions are 100% mine.

I don’t know if it’s because I live in Texas or because it’s so easy to cook but we eat quite a bit of Mexican food at our house. Since we eat so much of it, there are three ingredients that I keep on hand pretty much all the time: tortillas, cheese and avocados. I can usually improvise a Mexican recipe with other things I have on hand as long as I have those three things.

One of my husband’s favorite things for dinner (or lunch!) is homemade quesadillas with Mission Flour Tortillas because they taste so yummy. I put just about anything I’ve got in the pantry inside them. The night I made the ones pictured, these were the ingredients. Most everything were leftover ingredients from previous meals.

  • Mission Flour Tortillas
  • Cheese
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Mushrooms
  • Spinach
  • Avocado
  • Shrimp

I just sauteed the shrimp, onions and mushrooms ahead of time. Then sprinkled cheese on top of a tortilla. Added all the other ingredients, a little more cheese and another tortilla. I cooked it until the cheese was melted and hot through out. When I’m making a big batch, I’ll put the on a cookie sheet in the oven on low until I’m finished cooking them all so the first ones stay hot.

It a quick and easy dinner or lunch option. Shrimp can be pricey, unless you have leftovers from another recipe like I did. You could substitute chicken or go meatless. One of my favorite things to eat for lunch is a Whole Wheat Mission Tortilla with a little Monterrey jack cheese, tomatoes and chopped avocados. I add black beans for protein and it’s yummy and filling.

Do you have a family favorite recipe that uses Mission Tortillas? If so, you can submit it at Mission Menus Challenge for a chance to compete in a cook off in September. The grad prize is a $10,000 kitchen makeover! Now, who wouldn’t love to win that!? Hurry, the deadline for submitting your recipe is 8/9.
