Movers 300x199 5 Ways to Keep Your Identity Safe When Moving #LifeLock

Moving into a brand new home is both exciting and stressful. Fun because you have a new place to call your own and very exciting if you’ve purchased a new home, especially a first home. However, moving is hard. I did it twice last year, while I was pregnant. That is not something I would wish on my worst enemy.

The only thing worse that moving? Identity Theft. Identity Thieves can strike at any time and while you are moving, you can be especially vulnerable. Here are a few quick tips to help keep your family and identity safe during and after a move.

:: Make a Change of Address Checklist: Before you move, start making a list of all the companies that send you mail, bills and statements. You can let them know your new address and void mail being re-routed.

:: Destroy Old Files & Records: I don’t know about you but when time comes down to the wire. I start chucking things. As tempting as this is, don’t do it with your old files & records. Keep that information safe by shredding it. Invite a few friends over or get your kids involved and have a shredding party!

:: Research Moving Companies: Check the Better Business Bureau for reviews of movers before allowing them into your home. Ask friends and family for recommendations as well. This is a time when quality is better in the long run than the cheapest option.

:: Take a Home Inventory: Know what you packed & what the movers are moving. Then you’ll know what might be missing. This is also fabulous to keep in a safe place in the event of a fire or flood. Then you’ll know what to claim for insurance purposes.

:: Don’t Announce on Social Media: Once you are in your new place it’s probably not the safest idea to announce your new address on Facebook or Twitter. Let your friends and family know with an email. Or even better – a phone call!

These are just a few suggestions to help you when moving into a new home. For even more, check out the LifeLock for Life Sweepstakes, where you can also enter to win a LifeLock membership or $1,000 Visa gift card.
