Fun Friday Giveaway: Progresso Panko

Panko 300x199 Fun Friday Giveaway: Progresso Panko

Up until recently if you wanted to cook with Panko, you’d have to shop at a specialty food store. Well, good news. Progresso came out with a version of Panko that’s available in your regular supermarket.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Panko. it’s a flaky brean crumb that adds a light crispiness to food. You treat them like regular bread crumbs but you’ll notice more of a crunch. It’s much easier to get the fried taste and crispiness without having to fry. Just bake it in the oven.

Progresso’s version was every bit as good as the high-dollar specialty Panko I’ve cooked with before. It was much more reasonable on price, had a light flakiness and tasted great. I was pretty impressed because I didn’t go into my taste test with high expectiations.

The people at Progresso are so sure that you’ll love Panko too that they gave me a Progresso Panko and Broth Prize Pack to give away to one lucky reader. Inside you’ll find a sample of Progresso panko, a carton of Progresso broth, a measuring cup, slotted spoon, soup ladle and a sheet pan for baking.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So would you like to win one? As usual, there are 3 ways:

1. Leave a comment telling me about one of your favorite cooking tips. I like to swap out half broth for water when I cook pasta, rice or orzo. It gives the dish much more flavor.

2. Subscribe to Saving with Shellie via RSS feeds, email or Facebook. If you already subscribe, leave a second separate comment saying you do so.

3. Add Saving with Shellie to your blogroll or add my button to your sidebar. Make sure you come back and leave the link to your site in a separate comment.

The giveaway will end on Monday 11/9 at 11:59pm CST. I’ll announce the lucky winner on Tuesday 11/10.

Good Luck!

Disclosure: The review and statements above are my opinion and were not edited or reviewed by Progresso. IThe products for this giveaway and review were provided directly by Progresso and My Blog Spark.

My daughter loves homemade Macaroni & Cheese, and I love for her (& my other kids) to get their veggies…So I bake up a Butternut Squash, mash it up & add it to the melted cheese/roux mixture. They always love it & have no idea how good it actually is for them. Topping it off with Panko breadcrumbs would taste great!

When baking a cake instead of using flour to sprinkle on pan use a little bit of the dry cake mix. it works just as well and you arent left with a spotty white bottom when its done!

When I find a great deal on cheese (combining sales and coupons of course!) I stock up and freeze it. When I need to use some I either thaw it in the fridge or if I’m in a hurry put in in the microwave on defrost for a minute and it is good to go! I haven’t had to buy more cheese in months!

Whenever I make asian dish I like to marinate the meat with 2 Tbsp of rice wine (for non chinese dish), or 2 Tbsp of chinese wine (for chinese dish) and 2 Tbsp of Sesame oil. It makes the meat more flavorful just by marinating it for 10 minutes. You can do other variety too such as adding 2 Tbsp of ginger juice, wine (rice or chinese) and sesame oil – great base for ginger stir fry. Or 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, wine and sesame oil – works for any stir fry. You can also add ground sesame seeds (black or white) and 1 tsp of sugar to the marinate. Just dump the whole thing (meat and marinate) with veggies and super easy yummy dish! :)

When I cook spaghetti I like to add a little red wine to the sauce, it brings out the flavor and the house smells wonderful when cooking all day.

I get your emails & FaceBook posts already.
My favorite tip is using plain yogurt instead of mayo to make tuna salad. It has fewer calories that way too. If you’re going to serve it to the picky eaters just substitute some of the mayo or salad dressing until they get used to the taste change, adding more later.

Whenever a recipe calls for “slice meat into thin strips”, I place the meat into the freezer until it is partially frozen. It make slicing MUCH simpler!

I like to use beef broth instead of water when I make a pot of beans. It gives the beans a rich flavor

My favorite thing to do is use yogurt instead of sour cream. Same creaminess for less fat! Also, I freeze leftover wine in an ice cube tray so that I have it on hand for recipes that call for a couple of TBSP of wine.

To soften or keep cookies soft, store them with a slice of bread.

Instead of using a bowl to mix my meatloaf I mix it all in a big ziplock bag so i can just toss it. One less dish to clean.

I just added you on facebook! I’m excited! Here’s a tip…to make a really healthy coconut breaded chicken breast or fingers, I dip my chicken in a mixture of shredded coconut and honey wheat germ. Bake like usual and use honey mustard for a dipping sauce. Its so good!

I love using the recipes a kraft.com. They’re yummy and affordable.

To save money, I boil a whole chicken to use the meat and broth in recipes. But the smell of boiling chicken is not very good, so I add the tops of celery (leaves and all) or carrots or onion to cut down on the smell.

Tracey November 7, 2009 at 12:10 PM

I grind flax seeds and add it to my pasta sauce.

One of my favorite cooking tips is adding grated cheese (romano or pecorino) to my breadcrumbs. Chicken fingers or cutlets are delicious with a cheesy crust. Thanks so much for the great tips each day!

I stock up on bags of cubed frozen hash browns when I find them on sale. I keep them in my freezer to use in recipes that call for cubed potatoes. It’s convient to have ready peeled and cubed potatoes on hand. I can whip up a batch of potato soup or chowder in minutes leaving me more time to spend with my family.

One of my favorite cooking tips is to freeze ginger. When you grate it you get much more juice out of it!
